I set up Oakhunger to share my passion with you, developed from drawing and painting for over 50 years
Where does the name come from ? Well, Oakhunger is a tiny hamlet in the West of England, to the West of a small but historic Saxon market town of Berkeley, Gloucestershire. Oakhunger is where I grew up, at the time I was the only child in my family, in the area. I spent a lot of my childhood on my own. This is a perfect setting to develop an active and fertile imagination, and it was almost a natural thing to pick up a pencil and draw things that I saw, either outdoors or on TV, drawing and painting became an important was of expression, and it remains so with me to this day.
Like most people, it was a case of going through school, college, getting a job and sustaining myself and my family, which takes up most of all of our lives !
When the UK then went into lockdown during the Covid pandemic, many of us found ourselves in an unusual situation. Suddenly, we were presented with two immense challenges. One was the precious and precarious nature of our lives, (many of us lost friends and loved ones), the other was the notion of time on our hands, time to think, to consider, to do. My salvation came from being able to spend times drawing and painting, building a portfolio of work for the first time in my life.
Friends and acquaintances liked the work, I gave most of it away but a few friends said to me “hey, you could sell these.”I thought about it, and here we are.
I have my favourite subject areas, but my art is quite diverse; pets, football, formula one racing, landscapes, abstracts, portraits and themed pieces. My favourite is whichever I am working on at the time, My best work, could be somethign I paint for you !
