Passion can manifest itself in lots of ways, it isn’t only about hearts and flowers, it can be a very visceral and sometimes violent.
Some of the most “passionate” displays I have witnessed are those displayed by football supporters from the Balkan regions, Turkey and part of Eastern Europe. It is pure fanaticism. Our own British grounds are quite heavily policed and stewarded both inside and around the stadium. Elsewhere, there is a more laissez-faire attitude. It can be highly intimidating of course, but also very spectacular, as the flares and fires light up the sky to a soundtrack of loud, tribal singing and chanting.
This piece, entitled “Belgrade” depicts a scene from the city derby football match between Red Star and Partizan. I love the energy in this painting, and it reminds us that Art can be found practically anywhere.
