As a student in the early 1980s, music was massive. We still had bands in those days, some went on to carve their name in rock history, others were very of their time. Phases came and went, and with those phases came fashions. New Romanticism was one of them; borne out of the likes of Bowie, Roxy Music, T Rex, it provided a more flamboyant, and some would argue a safer route than the post punk and ska/reggae that revolved on my turntable.
The colours were the particular attraction, flirting with make up and different ways of wearing old and new clothes. Some of the music too, had its place in time, Duran Duran, Ultravox and Spandau Ballet were among three of the popular acts, acts which moved seamlessly into the new world of music video and MTV.
I tried to re-create this in the shades and strokes of this piece, I hope he conjured up memories of gigs, parties clubs, even school discos. Somewhere there is a set of sixth form disco photos featuring someone you know wearing something not unlike this !
